About the Libraries

New electronic resources are now accessible from the Web-based University Libraries online public access catalog. Ongoing financial investments enabled the libraries to radically enhance the electronic scholarly resources provided to our primary users - the faculty, students, staff and attending physicians at the University's core-affiliated hospitals.

A major renovation of the Smith Library on the Newark Campus was recently completed. A highlight of the renovation is the creation of an information commons that incorporates 48 new public access workstations and a 16-seat electronic training classroom on the Library's main level. Licensing of full-text electronic content for the University community continues to take high priority. Librarians on all campuses are expanding their teaching and training activities focusing on the new electronic content. Over 15 library-based working groups have been formed to address project-specific planning and implementation to fast-track new services for our users. The Libraries' consumer health project, HealthyNJ, has again received high marks and financial support from the National Library of Medicine to expand and promote its Spanish language content. As a result of a recently approved agreement with the Cooper Health System, the Reuben L. Sharp Library of the Health Sciences has become an important new member of the UMDNJ Library System. As part of the University Libraries commitment to IAIMS, a number of key projects have been identified as priorities. These include among others a digital library project, creating direct links to scholarly resources from the electronic medical record, implementing electronic reserves for access to curriculum required materials, and infusing library skills content into the curricula of the schools and bioinformatics programs.

Library resources and services are provided to the University community at the Scotch Plains campus by means of electronic linkages.

Centralized Services/Support Systems Group
Composed of the staffs of Electronic Resources Services, Cataloging, and Systems Departments, this group provides centralized services to all campus libraries, and is responsible for the operations and maintenance of the University Libraries Health Information Network, the integrated library system which electronically links the UMDNJ libraries to each other, to our users, and to the world.

Electronic Resources Services are responsible for the licensing and management of UMDNJ Libraries e-books, online journals and databases. Suggestions for new electronic resources should be offered to Elizabeth Sosnowska, the Electronic Resources Librarian via email to: sosnowsk@umdnj.edu.

The Online Catalog allows users to locate books, audiovisuals, journals and other materials owned by any of the UMDNJ Libraries. Access to the catalog is provided via computers in the library, or remotely, through the Remote Access Service. The collections and services of the University Libraries are available to our users in-house, on-line, through interlibrary loan, by facsimile, or by courier. Participation in library consortia enables us to supplement and share our resources beyond the UMDNJ community. Faculty, students, staff, and attending physicians at University core affiliate hospitals are designated our primary users. For counsel, or questions regarding access, primary users should consult their campus library.

Special Collections in the History of Medicine and University Archives
Serving the entire UMDNJ community, this Department, located at the George F. Smith Library on the Newark Campus, acquires and maintains collections in the History of Medicine, University Archives, and primary source materials. These collections include rare books, manuscripts, oral histories, photographs and illustrations, official UMDNJ records, and faculty papers. The focus is on U.S. medical history, with special emphasis on the history of the health sciences in New Jersey.
