EndNote X3 for Windows is now available for the UMDNJ community

August 2009

EndNote X3 is the latest version of a bibliographic management software by Thomson Reuters and is now available to be downloaded free of charge by UMDNJ faculty, staff, and students. The program performs a number of useful functions. It stores the results of database searches (citations) for use in Word documents. For example, you can import citations from databases like OVIDSP, CINAHL, PubMed, and even Google Scholar. EndNote integrates seamlessly with MS Word to create bibliographies for papers, articles, book chapters, and grant proposals. The "Cite While You Write" (CWYW) feature lets you insert citations into documents and creates bibliographies in nearly 4000 styles, including APA style and those required for publication in numerous health sciences journals. The days of struggling with the bibliography at the end of the writing process are over!

EndNote X3 has many improvements that experienced users will notice. It has been redesigned to start faster than any previous version. Sharing EndNote libraries has been made easier with enhancement to the "Compress Libraries" feature; selected citations (with or without attachments) or your entire EndNote library can be compressed and sent to colleagues. Duplicate references can now be compared side by side. EndNote X3 has improved the ability to take advantage of "Find Full Text." This feature uses UMDNJ subscriptions to retrieve full-text articles. (There are instructions on The University Libraries' EndNote blog on how to set up EndNote X3 to work with "Find Full Text" or Open URL.) Another new feature of is the ability to create multiple bibliographies within a single document. If you are writing a book each chapter or section can have a bibliography, in addition to a bibliography at the end of the book. A feature called "Composite Styles" has been added to facilitate publication in journals that require both numbers and letters in the bibliography.

The most significant change to this new version is the integration with Open Office. Within the academic community, the trend toward “open source” programs and software has been momentous. Cite While You Write (CWYW) is fully compatible/integrated with Open Office Writer 3.

The UMDNJ campus libraries offer regularly-scheduled workshops on the use of EndNote. See the home page of your library for a list of library workshops and for information on how to register to attend.
