The postcard collection documents a variety of medical care facilities, and health-related businesses and institutions in New Jersey throughout the 20th century. The collection of 709 cards contains black and white, color, sepia-toned, and ‘realphoto' postcards. Most of the items date to the early 1900s -- the "golden era" of post card production. The collection is divided into three broad areas: Health care facilities, Commercial businesses and institutions, and Miscellaneous.
Health care facilities are buildings and
institutions that provide health-related assistance to individuals.
They are organized by location. These facilities include: hospitals,
infirmaries, medical centers, asylums, sanitariums, health resorts,
convalescent and other special homes, preventoriums, special schools
and summer camps, homes for the aged and veteran soldiers and their families, and rehabilitation institutes. For many of these
structures, postcard images are the only visual records that remain for
them. In addition, several facilities documented in this collection no
longer exist or new medical buildings have replaced them.
Commercial businesses and institutions
consist of large pharmaceutical companies, local drug stores,
pharmaceutical and patent medicine advertisements, physician
appointment reminders and advertising, and funeral homes; they are
arranged alphabetically by business name. Miscellaneous includes a number of New Jersey health-related subjects, such as medical schools and individual
doctor's cards. The miscellaneous items are sorted alphabetically.
