UMDNJ Board of Trustees Approves Affiliation with
Saint Barnabas Health Care System
|
NEWARK — The Board of Trustees of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey today approved the establishment of a major clinical affiliation between UMDNJ and Saint Barnabas Health Care System. The unanimous vote occurred at today’s regular meeting.
Under the affiliation, UMDNJ’s New Jersey Medical School, one of the University’s three medical schools, will partner with Saint Barnabas Medical Center and Newark Beth Israel Hospital to develop clerkships and other clinical instruction opportunities for medical students a the two hospitals.
"The affiliation with Saint Barnabas enhances our ability to provide high
quality medical education to our students by exposing them to healthcare
practices at one of New Jersey's premier healthcare systems," said Dr. Robert Johnson, Interim Dean of UMDNJ – New Jersey Medical School. “This will ensure our students are among the best-trained doctors in the nation.”
The agreement will also provide opportunities for research collaboration between the institutions. It does not require any financial obligations of the parties.
“The Saint Barnabas Health Care System is extremely proud to be creating this relationship with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey – New Jersey Medical School, stated Ronald J. Del Mauro, President and Chief Executive Officer.
“We feel it will be mutually beneficial in growing medical education programs at all levels that can be a model for teaching programs throughout the nation and also offers the opportunity for research and clinical initiatives. The collaboration will serve to further enhance educational programs and the entire delivery of health care not only for the residents of Newark and Essex County but throughout the state of New Jersey and the tri-state area.”
