CINJ Leaders Receive Prestigious Award
at International Conference in Chicago
CINJ Interim Director, Chief Medical Officer Honored
at American Society of Clinical Oncology Meeting

NEW BRUNSWICK — Recognized by cancer specialists from around the globe, two noted leaders at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ) were honored with the inaugural Statesman Award at the 43rd Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), which is taking place in Chicago this week.
Joseph R. Bertino, MD, Interim Director and Chief Scientific Officer at CINJ and University Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School; and Joseph Aisner, MD, Chief Medical Officer at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Professor of Medicine and Environmental and Occupational Medicine at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, were recognized during the annual business portion of the gathering.
The award recognizes volunteer efforts and significant societal contributions made by ASCO members who have served as presidents, board members and founders in the past. More than 100 recipients who served in such a capacity between 1964 and 1997 received the honor. In future years, the award will be bestowed upon those volunteers who have served 20 cumulative years in ASCO. Bertino is a past president, while Aisner is a past member of the Board of Directors.
Bertino, who has been recognized internationally for his role in finding curative treatments in the areas of leukemia and lymphoma, said he feels honored, "Through my involvement with ASCO, I have had the opportunity to collaborate with outstanding clinicians and scientists from around the world. ASCO provides a forum for us to continue our progress towards the common goal of eradicating cancer."
Aisner is likewise honored to be recognized as a part of ASCO, "ASCO is an outstanding international organization focused on both education and the dissemination of clinical and translational research in cancer. The organization has grown to support young and more seasoned investigators, support programs for cancer survivors, promote cancer care excellence, and lobby for access to cancer care throughout the USA and the world. Participation in ASCO has provided all of us an excellent forum to interact with other cancer researchers and care givers."
The annual meeting, according to ASCO literature, aims to foster communication among oncology-related subspecialties and the exchange of a wide-range of ideas related to cancer. The five-day event is attended by international clinical researchers, doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other related health professionals. This year's conference is focusing on advances in research in breast, lung, and head and neck cancers among others.
