UMDNJ Board of Trustees Welcomes New Member

NEWARK — The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Board of Trustees welcomed a new board member today. Kevin M. Covert joined the board and was sworn in at today’s regular meeting.
Covert is the Vice President and Deputy General Counsel for Human Resources at Honeywell International Inc. He is the most recent addition to the Board of Trustees since Gov. Jon S. Corzine signed legislation last year expanding the Board from 11 to 19 members.
"We continue to be gratified by the qualifications and professionalism of the new appointees by the Governor to the UMDNJ Board,” said Board Chairman Robert Del Tufo. “Over the past year, the University has taken significant steps forward and I am confident Mr. Covert’s contribution will be significant.”
At Honeywell, Covert is responsible for all legal matters including litigation, compliance and corporate transactions relating to labor, employment, employee benefits and compensation. He oversees labor negotiations and language of collective bargaining agreements.
Covert received a B.S. in Finance from Rider University, a J.D. from Rutgers University School of Law and an LL.M. in Taxation from New York University.
“I am both grateful and humbled by the support of the Governor and the Legislature in appointing me to this position,” said Covert. “The mission of UMDNJ as vibrant system of higher education, research, healthcare and community service is vitally important to the citizens of New Jersey. I pledge nothing but my best as I work with the Board on behalf of the University and the state of New Jersey.”
UMDNJ is the nation’s largest free-standing public health sciences university with more than 5,700 students attending the state’s three medical schools, its only dental school, a graduate school of biomedical sciences, a school of health related professions, a school of nursing and its only school of public health, on five campuses. Last year, there were more than two million patient visits to UMDNJ facilities and faculty at campuses in Newark, New Brunswick/Piscataway, Scotch Plains, Camden and Stratford. UMDNJ operates University Hospital, a Level I Trauma center in Newark, and University Behavioral HealthCare, a mental health and addiction services network.
