UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School Celebrates the Healing Power of Art
Festival Features a Variety of Works from Faculty, Staff and Students

NEWARK — A six-week art installation at UMDNJ’s Newark campus opened September 8, showcasing works from faculty, staff, students and friends of UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School. The show runs through October 27.

The Arts Festival debuted in 1999 to celebrate the artistic talent of the New Jersey Medical School community and focuses on the importance of artistic outlets in personal health and wellness.

A variety of media comprise this year’s show: painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, quilts, needlepoint, jewelry and poetry.

More than 100 works are displayed on the main level of the Medical Science Building located at 185 South Orange Avenue in Newark.

For the first time this year, the festival committee will host an Artists' Reception on Tuesday, October 10 in the Grand Foyer of the Medical Science Building from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Several arts activities will take place during the festival including an open poetry reading session, a bead jewelry workshop, a class on doll making and an a cappella performance of Neapolitan songs.

Founded in 1954 as the Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry, UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School was the state’s first medical school. Today, it is part of UMDNJ, the nation’s largest health sciences institution. More than 5,500 students attend the state's three medical schools, its only dental school, a graduate school of biomedical sciences, a school of health related professions, a school of nursing and a school of public health on five campuses. Annually, there are more than two million patient visits at UMDNJ facilities and faculty at campuses in Newark, New Brunswick/Piscataway, Scotch Plains, Camden and Stratford. UMDNJ operates University Hospital, a Level I Trauma Center in Newark, and University Behavioral HealthCare, a mental health and addiction services network.
