UMDNJ Sponsors Panel Discussion on
Trends in Alternative and Complementary Medicine

NEWARK—The trend of combining holistic and traditional approaches to medical care, and how that practice is redefining health care will be the focus of a panel discussion on Thursday.

The discussion will focus on the upcoming two-part PBS documentary, The New Medicine (www.thenewmedicine.org/press). The program is hosted by the late Dana Reeve, widow of the actor Christopher Reeve and an advocate for stem cell research. It will air on April 5 and April 12, at 9 p.m., on NJN. The documentary will explore how physicians are increasingly integrating treatments based on mind-body principals with traditional approaches such as high tech medical procedures.

Prior to the panel discussion, Dr. Tracy Gaudet, director of the Duke Center for Integrative Medicine and one of the physicians interviewed for the PBS documentary, will present an overview of the issues raised in the program.

Dr. Adam Perlman, executive director of the Institute for Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Hunterdon Endowed Professor of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, will moderate the panel discussion. Participants include: Dr. Dorian Wilson, director of the Center for Humanism and Medicine at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School; Dr. Beatrix Roemheld-Hamm, director of alternative medicine in the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Family Practice Center at Monument Square, and Dr. Ann Cotter, medical director of the Mind Body Center at Morristown Memorial Hospital.

The public is welcome to attend this free event in Newark, which is being sponsored by The Institute for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the UMDNJ-School of Health Related Professions. The program, "Integrating Complementary & Alternative Medicine into Today's Healthcare: The Opportunities," will be broadcast on three additional UMDNJ campuses: Clinical Academic Building, 125 Paterson Street, Room 1302, New Brunswick; Academic Center, One Medical Center Drive, Room 276, Stratford; and Education and Research Building, 401 Haddon Avenue, Room 152, Camden.
