UMDNJ To Host Healthcare and Cultural Diversity Seminar for Health Professionals

(2/20/06)—Health professionals are invited to attend a seminar on providing quality patient care to diverse populations on Friday, March 10, from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, 185 South Orange Ave., Room C-600, Newark.

Co-sponsored by the UMDNJ-School of Nursing, "Clinical Applications of Cultural Competence: A Multidisciplinary Approach," is an accredited continuing education seminar that will feature nationally recognized professionals in nursing, medicine and education. Nurses attending this workshop will receive 6.6 New Jersey State Nursing Association credits.

Speakers include Dr. Madeleine Leininger, the founder of the study and practice of Transcultural Nursing and professor emeritus at Wayne State University; Dr. Robert Like, professor and director of the Center for Healthy Families and Communities of the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School; and Dr. Lorretta Sweet Jemmott, professor and director of the Center for Health Disparities Research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. The seminar will address issues such as culturally congruent care practices, ethical decision-making, health disparities, and culturally competent prevention and health promotion.

The conference is co-sponsored by the Stanley S. Bergen Center for Multicultural Education, Research and Practice, the François Xavier Bagnoud Center, and the Center for Lifelong Learning all at the UMDNJ-School of Nursing. The UMDNJ-University Hospital Palliative Care Service, with support from the Aetna Foundation, is another co-sponsor.

Registration is free for UMDNJ employees and students. Registration for other students and health professionals is $20 and $50 respectively.
