Society of University Surgeons Honors Four Physicians

3/23/05—Four members of the Department of Surgery at University of Medicine and Dentistry of NewJersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School were recently inducted into the Society of University Surgeons.

Randall Burd, M.D., Ph.D., David Gorski, M.D., Ph.D., and Roderich Schwarz, M.D., Ph.D., all assistant professors of surgery at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and James Goydos, M.D., associate professor of surgery, UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, were honored by the Society for excelling in their work as surgeons, teachers and researchers and showing great promise for the future of academic surgery.

Drs. Gorski, Goydos and Schwarz are surgical oncologists at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ). Dr. Burd is a pediatric surgeon at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

"This is a major academic honor and having more than one surgeon inducted from a single institution is a strong testament to the academic stature of our institution," said Stephen Lowry, M.D., chair of the Department of Surgery at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. "We are extremely proud of Drs. Burd, Gorski, Goydos and Schwarz and congratulate them on their induction into this prestigious professional society."

"Membership in the Society of University Surgeons is extremely competitive with only 250 members under the age of 45 throughout the country," added David August, M.D., chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology at CINJ and associate professor of surgery at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

The mission of the Society of University Surgeons is to advance the art and science of surgery by encouraging its members to pursue original clinical and laboratory research, develop methods of graduate teaching of surgery, and exchange free and informal ideas pertaining to academic surgery.
