At UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine
World Renowned Surgeon Featured as Mary Elizabeth Groff Lecture Series Begins on May 18

The Department of Surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)-School of Osteopathic Medicine has established the Mary Elizabeth Groff lecture series, sponsored by the Groff Foundation. The series will bring nationally renowned physicians to the Stratford campus to talk about the latest developments in their area of expertise.

The first lecture, set for Saturday, May 18, at 9 a.m., in the school's Academic Center, 40 East Laurel Road, in Stratford, will feature Norman W. Thompson, M.D., FACS, the Henry King Ransom professor of surgery at the University of Michigan Medical Center. Dr. Thompson is an internationally known endocrine surgeon who has lectured widely and written extensively on thyroid and parathyroid diseases.

"We're thrilled to have someone like Dr. Thompson to lead off our lecture series," said James Weese, M.D., FACS, professor and chairperson of the Department of Surgery at UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine. "We're deeply grateful to the Mary Elizabeth Groff Foundation, whose generous grant is making this lecture series possible. Dr. Thompson's lecture will set the tone for what will be one of the most significant medical lecture series to take place in this area in recent memory."

The lecture series will extend over the next year and will showcase an array of topics on leading surgical issues and research.

The Mary Elizabeth Groff Foundation was established in 1993 to promote and advance medical science and education.
