UMDNJ–New Jersey Medical School Alumni
Association Provides Scores of Scholarships to Students
|
NEWARK — In an effort to “give back,” the Alumni Association of the New Jersey Medical School recently awarded more than $170,000 in scholarships to scores of deserving UMDNJ – NJMS students.
The awards were announced during the Alumni Association’s 25th Annual Scholarship Dinner, at which students were recognized for their academic achievements.
Dr. Joseph V. DiTrolio, Class of 1979, President of the Alumni Association, sees the annual awards as a way to lessen the burden of debt incurred by medical students, many of whom graduate from medical school with more than $100,000 in debt.
“Remember, one of the responsibilities we have is the responsibility to give back to the New Jersey Medical School,” DiTrolio said to the audience of more than 300. “Today’s medical students graduate with huge debt. This is a way for us to help the students defray some of those costs, as their future income potential is in question.”
Scholarship recipients were selected by the Alumni Association’s Scholarship Committee based on their academic standing, financial need and involvement in school and community activities.
See attached list for scholarship recipients from your coverage area.
Founded in 1954 as the Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry, New Jersey Medical School was the state’s first medical school. Today, it is part of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey is the nation's largest free-standing public health sciences university with more than 5,700 students attending the state's three medical schools, its only dental school, a graduate school of biomedical sciences, a school of health related professions, a school of nursing and its only school of public health, on five campuses. Last year, there were more than two million patient visits to UMDNJ facilities and faculty at campuses in Newark, New Brunswick/Piscataway, Scotch Plains, Camden and Stratford. UMDNJ operates University Hospital, a Level I Trauma Center in Newark, and University Behavioral HealthCare, a mental health and addiction services network.
